“红楼”、“西厢”的英译

张心沧在“Chinese Literature Popular Fiction and Drama”一书中，通译了《红楼梦》第二十三回，这一回是：“西厢记妙词通戏语牡丹亭艳曲警芳心”。也即是宝玉黛玉在园中偷看《西厢记》那一回。

且看这一段：

宝玉笑道：“妹妹，你说好不好？”林黛玉笑道：“果然有趣。”宝玉笑道：“我就是个‘多愁多病身’，你就是那‘倾国倾城貌’。”林黛玉听了，不觉带腮连耳通红，登时直竖起两道似蹙非蹙的眉，瞪了两只似睁非睁的眼，微腮带怒，薄面含嗔，••••••

宝玉套用《西厢记》的两句，译文是这样的：

"The melancholy and sickly lover"——that I am assuredly! And yours——yours, "the face that overthrew cities and kingdoms"!

这两句，王际真的英译是这样的：

I am one "laden with sorrow and maladies" and you are "a beauty that ruins cities and nation."

英人 McHugh 的译文是这样的：

I am the hero full of faults and weakness, and you——you are the heroine whose beauty causes the downfall of cities and countries.

他是从《红楼梦》的德文译本翻译成英文的，“多愁多病的身”的英译似不贴切原文。

Hawkes 的英译是这样的：

"How can I, full of sickness and of woe,
Withstand that face which kingdoms could overthrow?"

最后一种英译，另有奇趣。
